Book recommendations!

What are you all reading at the moment? Can you share the title, author and give a quick blurb about the book and why you have chosen it? Would you recommend it based on what you have read so far?

I’m currently reading Ripley Under Ground by Patricia Highsmith. It’s the second instalment in a crime series about a very dubious character named Tom Ripley who commits all manner of terrible crimes. The interesting thing about this book it that although the primary character is a very bad person who belongs in jail, you can’t help but root for him against your better judgement. Another reason why I like this series is that the settings are always very beautiful and evocative. The previous novel was primarily set on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, while this novel is primarily set in the rural South of France. This is the perfect escapism for me in this current climate of travel bans and self-isolation.

I would not recommend this book for anyone under the age of 15 as some of the scenes are very violent. I would bear it in mind for if you enjoy crime novels when you are older.

I am reading a book called Kick. I haven’t read that far into it, but it is about a boy called Budi who likes to play football. He supports Real Madrid and he has a problem with his blood that means when he cuts himself it takes longer than usual to stop bleeding. He works ata shoe-making factory. I haven’t read far enough to recommend it though.

I am reading as book call ‘the thing about jellyfish’ (there aren’t any caps in the front page of the book so I guess the author, Ali Benjamin, wants it that way).

    The blurb is:
Maybe, if we can stop feeling so afraid, we can remember that all the creatures on this Earth are made from stardust. And we are the only ones who get to know it.

Suzy doesn’t speak anymore. Not since her best friend, Franny, drownd. Suzy can’t believe it – Franny was an excellent swimmer. She must have been stung by a deadly jellyfish. it’s the only explanation. And Suzy is going to prove it.

So she retreats into silence, researching the jellyfish and formulating a plan that will take her across the world to discover the truth about the creature she’s certain took her best friend away from her.

Oh we read this book last year with Book Club.
It’s very good! The book club loved it. What are your thoughts so far?

I like it so far because I always like these type of books 🙂

Also my mum has bought some Morris Gleitzman books after I recommended them to her – and ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ by John Green.

I really like the way The Thing About Jellyfish is structured. How do you feel about the structure of the book and what impact does it have on you as a reader?

    MR BURNS
I can only open the French lesson and the Vikings for today, and when I try to open the others, it just comes up with
    Error. 404. Page Not Found!!!
    What do I do??

    • aburns says:

That’s really annoying Yeseo. There are still a lot of technical glitches on the website sadly, but we’re working on them. I’ll try to upload those documents again shortly.

    • Adi says:

Normally this means that you don’t have Word/Powerpoint/Whatever app you need on your device so it won’t open.

The same thing happened on my Ipad but when I downloaded Word/Powerpoint it worked

I can’t find another place to do this so I’m doing here. Do we have to do all the questions for each image in the RE?

I suggest Magic misfits 1 and 2.Kid normal 1, 2 and 3. Finally Dimond brothers collection.

I recommend the City Of Ember which is about a boy and a girl (Lina and Doon) that live in a place called Ember. Their supplies are running out and their lights are failing so when Lina finds an old document, together they try to save city’s people and find a way out of this dystopian city.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Adventure/Dystopia(If that even counts as a Genre).

It says that this is a duplicate comment so I have to put this here.

I would like to recommend The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time. People in book club have read and I think they enjoyed it too as I did It has some sware words and older language, so some people might find it challenging. I don’t think many people will but just in case. I won’t reveal too much but, it is a murder mystery and just a great book. So many mysteries come across the characters in the book and makes it really interesting. Again it does have some older year language but was recommened in book club.

    • aburns says:

I’m really glad that you enjoyed reading this book Amy. It really is fantastic. I love the protagonist Christopher and how the author uses the first person narrative to really develop his character. I would like to see more diverse heroes like Christopher in books. It’s inspiring.
What is your favourite part of the book and why?

  10. Amy :) says:

Sorry I forgot a full stop

    • Adi says:

You forgot a full stop replying that you forgot a full stop, Amy.
Plus, you didn’t actually forget a full stop in the first place.

  11. Yeseo ☆-☆ says:

I didn’t see the reply that you sent me Mr. Burns, but I think that this book is structured well because the way that the author wrote this book actually seems like it was written by a 10-11 year old. Also, I think that it is interesting because Suzy says that the reader is part of the book. Additionally, I think it is different to other books because usually there would be a small amount of flashbacks but in this book one chapter is written in the present tense, then the next is a flashback.

    • aburns says:

I love the alternating chapters in this book and how every second chapter is a flashback. It really creates tension as we learn what happened in the past and how it has impacted the present in the book.
I think you should write a book review!
