Thank you to everyone for the fantastic selection of philosophical questions suggested for discussion using the above image as stimulus.

I have chosen Joey’s double question which I feel is well worth some deeper discussion.

Do you think male clothes make her look more important and powerful? If so, does that mean that men seem like more important and powerful people?

First of all, there are no such things as ‘male clothes’ therefore proving that men seem more powerful.

  2. Ewen says:

Sorry I accidentally said do on my answer.

I think that what she’s wearing really makes her stand out, but the picture looks really old and I think when the photo was taken, men were meant to be important and powerful, therefore making it “male clothes”. I think this was what Joey was trying to say.

  4. Jake says:

I agree with Yeseo I think that the picture was taken a long time ago when it was thought that the clothes she is wearing now were called “male clothes”.

  5. Elpida says:

    a) I don’t think that the ‘male clothes’ she is wearing are meant to make her look more important or powerful. I think she is making a fashion statement, wearing a suit that is made to fit a woman’s body and look elegant, and is not what a professional woman would wear at work, but as an outfit for going to a restaurant.
    b) Unfortunately in certain jobs, as Finance, Politics and the Army, men are still thought to be more powerful and important in the jobs, and this is obvious by the gender pay gap. Luckily, there is a trend for this to change.

I don’t think clothes determine how powerful you are. They can make you seem more powerful or feel more powerful but does that really change anything? Also, I believe there is no such thing as male clothes, so if she dresses in so called ‘male clothes’ it will not make a difference to her status or how much power she has.

I agree with Catherine a bit. Sometimes if you were to look at somebody with ripped up clothes that aren’t very clean, even if they are just the only clothes you could find, you would get picked on. If you have the newest clothing and the newest style, you could be considered popular now. People always get judged on how they look. Just from the colour or look of your clothes, people decide how you act. It shouldn’t be like this.

  8. Joey :) says:

When I said male clothes I meant clothes you are more likely to see a male wear.

Well done Ospreys, some great discussion in this thread. Lots of interesting opinions on gender, clothes and power.
